Scarlett’s Story — Hope on Four (Wobbly) Legs

On September 18, 2025, Scarlett joined the Appalachian Great Pyrenees Rescue family after one of our longtime adopters and volunteers reached out from the Lynchburg area. He had spotted Scarlett at a local shelter, where she had first come in as a stray. She was adopted briefly, but returned when her new family realized she was going to be a big dog.

Despite being close to capacity, we couldn’t turn her away. Scarlett was painfully thin and clearly struggling to walk. She needed food, care, and time. And she needed them right away.

When Scarlett arrived, she was only about three months old. She had trouble standing, and when she did move, her back curved and her legs wobbled beneath her. Our first goal was simple: get some good food into her and help her gain strength.

Once she started walking more steadily, our vet confirmed what we suspected: hip issues might be in her future. For now, the focus has been on healthy meals, gentle exercise, and lots of love to build up her muscles before we reassess.

Nearly two months later, Scarlett is blossoming. She’s gained weight, she’s stronger, and she’s walking farther every day. When she gets excited and speeds up, her back legs “bunny hop,” but when she slows down, her stride looks much more normal, if a bit knock-kneed. After the holidays, she’ll go back to the vet for X-rays to help us determine what comes next. It’s possible she’ll need hip or knee surgery down the line, but for now, we’re celebrating every step she takes on her own.

And Scarlett? She’s not worried one bit. This girl is pure joy. She adores people, dogs, toys, and anyone willing to sit with her in her kennel for a few minutes of cuddle time. Her tail never stops wagging (we’re pretty sure it helps propel her forward), and her enthusiasm for life is infectious. She’s also a big fan of breakfast — especially when one of her favorite volunteers brings her scrambled eggs. Twelve eggs? No problem. Scarlet’s up for the challenge.

Scarlett’s story reminds us why we do what we do — and why we can’t stop, even when space is tight and resources are thin. Every dog like Scarlett deserves a chance to heal, to grow strong, and to discover the joy of being loved.

As Giving Tuesday approaches, Scarlett will be the face of our campaign—a symbol of the heart, hope, and determination that drives Appalachian Great Pyrenees Rescue every single day. Stay tuned to learn how you can join the Welcome Waggin’ and help us say “yes” to the next Scarlett who needs us.
