What To Expect When You’re Expecting… a Great Pyrenees
When we first saw Blueberry—known then as Snuffles—it was love at first sight. With his soulful eyes, slightly crooked smile, and that unmistakable Pyr floof, we knew he was something special. We brought him home, not entirely sure what to expect, but completely certain we were smitten.
As anyone who’s welcomed a Great Pyrenees into their life can tell you, love is just the beginning.

Whether you’re adopting a puppy or bringing home an adult, Great Pyrenees are loyal, protective, and full of heart—but they also come with a few quirks that new owners should be ready for. So, here’s what to expect when you’re expecting… a Great Pyrenees.
Prepare for fur. Lots of it.
Great Pyrenees have thick double coats built for mountain life. That means year-round shedding (especially in spring and fall), clouds of fluff on your furniture, and the occasional tumbleweed of white hair rolling by. Brushing helps. A good vacuum helps more. And don’t forget the “pyr glitter” that will adorn your clothes! Just consider it a sign of unconditional love.
Independence is their love language.
These dogs were bred to guard flocks without human instruction, so they’re used to making their own decisions. Your Pyr isn’t ignoring you—he’s just evaluating whether your request passes his internal logic test. Training a Pyr takes patience, humor, and treats. Lots of treats.
They love their people—but they also love their perimeter.
A Pyr will walk the fence line like it’s his job (because it is). They’re wired to protect their home and the people in it, and they take that duty seriously. Barking is part of the package—it’s how they announce, “All is well,” or “Something moved in the distance and I am on it.”
They are gentle giants—with big hearts and even bigger paws.
Despite their size, most Pyrs are incredibly gentle, especially with children and other animals. They form deep bonds with their people—and once they trust you, they’re yours forever.
