On August 17, 2017, we adopted Becca and Samson from AGPR when they were about a year and half old. When Becca arrived at AGPR, Samson was immediately drawn to her, and they became a bonded pair that had to be adopted together. Their love for each other was apparent from the moment we got them home and it never wavered. They would play together until they tired each other out and then just cuddle. Sometimes when Samson was just sitting and surveying his backyard, Becca would run up behind him and give him a gigantic hug. Together, they were goofy, fun, rambunctious, mischievous, and they loved to BARK. Samson’s main triggers included: UPS, Amazon, mail truck, foxes, deer, large birds, and pretty much any dog that walked by the house. Once he started barking, Becca would bark just for the heck of it because most of the time, she had no idea what she was barking at.
Samson and Becca loved people and people loved them. On their daily walks, people would stop us and ask if they could meet/pet them, or they would drive by us and stop in the middle of the road to tell us how beautiful they were, and some would even get out of their car to meet them. They really became rock stars of the neighborhood.
Becca was the goofiest of the two of them and had this great way of hopping around whenever she was happy and excited. Samson had a goofy side too, and coming home to him was always a treat because he’d get this little wag in his butt and either roll on his back or get into full play mode. Beyond his goofiness though, Samson was a guardian and protector and his favorite place to be was in the backyard or the screened porch to make sure he wasn’t missing anything. If he had his choice, he would spend all day outside, assuming it was cold (he hated summer heat) and not raining.
Unfortunately, their time together (and ours with them) was way too short. Becca had Severe Subaortic Stenosis and while we knew her life expectancy was going to be shorter than a typical Pyr…she was given 2.5 to 5 years by her cardiologist…she lived a year longer than expected. About 6 weeks after her 6th birthday, on a beautiful sunny afternoon in May 2022, Becca went outside to lay in the sun and went peacefully to sleep. In January 2024, Samson had a large mass surgically removed and we learned it was extraskeletal intestinal osteosarcoma, a rare, highly malignant cancer with a very high chance of coming back. Although he recovered well from surgery, about 5 weeks later Samson started to show signs that the cancer had returned. On March 25, 2024, the day started normally but Samson started declining in the afternoon and shortly before midnight, he peacefully went to sleep and reunited with his Becca.
There will never be another Samson and Becca and they’ll forever be in our hearts.
